A review of the evidence on the relationship between gender and adolescents’ involvement in violent behaviour.
Summary: Reviews literature published between 1990 and 2011 relating to adolescents’violent behaviour. Examines risk and protective factors associated with gender. Finds that although literature shows a relationship between gender and violent behaviour, with male adolescents more likely to be violent than their female peers, the link is mediated by other factors. Identifies community group as a key mediating factor. Suggests that longitudinal research into target communities should be undertaken before devising new prevention strategies.
