Forced marriage: mandatory reporting

The Home Office has called for responses to a proposed mandatory reporting duty requiring professionals to report cases of forced marriage. Questions for consideration include: the introduction of a mandatory reporting duty on forced marriage; what types of cases should be reported under a new duty; which age groups should be subject to a mandatory reporting duty; which professionals should the duty apply to and to whom reports should be made. The consultation closes at 11pm on 23 January 2019.

BULLYING STATISTICS: 2018

Bullying statistics: 2018

The Department for Education (DfE) has released statistics on the prevalence of bullying amongst 10-15-year-olds across England from April 2013 to March 2018. Analysis is based on the ONS crime survey for England and Wales and includes: the frequency of the bullying; where bullying takes place; the types of bullying, including cyberbullying; bullying rate by characteristics such as gender, age, ethnicity, religion and region.

The Department for Education (DfE) has updated guidance for schools on supporting pupils with mental health problems. Updates include: information about school responsibilities in relation to mental health; how to identify behaviours that might be related to mental health problems; working with external professionals and agencies; where to find further support.

KNIFE CRIME: STATISTICS

Knife crime: statistics

The House of Commons Library has provided a briefing paper on knife crime in England and Wales, based on data published by the Office of National Statistics’ (ONS). The briefing states: according to the Crime Survey for England and Wales, in the year ending March 2016, 6.2 per cent of 10-15-year-olds knew someone who carried a knife for their own protection; for the same period 0.3 per cent of 10-15-year-olds reported that they carried a knife themselves.

Consent online: resources

The UK Safer Internet Centre has developed a series of resources for 3-18-year-olds focusing on the topic of consent online and how consent is asked for, given and received in different circumstances. The resources, available in English and Welsh, feature four educational packs for children and young people, a pack for parents and carers and a pack to support educators. The resources accompany Safer internet day 2019 which takes place on 5th February 2019.

Mental health provision and wellbeing in schools

The Department for Education (DfE) has published a report summarising findings from a research project looking at the information schools in England provide to support their pupils’ wellbeing and mental health. Findings from a study involving 45 secondary schools, 45 primary schools and 10 special schools include: a variety of approaches, interventions, and support were identified in schools’ policies that can contribute towards the promotion of mental health and wellbeing; schools would benefit from further awareness, advice and resources to enable stand-alone interventions to be further embedded within whole-school strategies that promote the mental health and wellbeing of all pupils

A third of secondary school pupils are suffering from mental health issues

A third of secondary school pupils are suffering from mental health issues

A study by Action for Children has revealed that a third of 15- to 18-year-olds in the UK struggle with mental health or emotional well-being issues. Depression, restless sleep, and an inability to focus are among problems highlighted.

The charity last year launched its Blues Programme, which provides early support for secondary school pupils with depression.
